As a follow-up to our post from January 13, 2018, we’d like to revisit Ryanair’s baggage policies. The Irish low-cost airline isn’t just making headlines with its unbeatable fares; right now, the topic of baggage policies is once again on everyone’s lips.
Currently, every passenger, including Economy Class travelers, can still travel with two free pieces of luggage. One piece, weighing a maximum of 10 kilograms, must be checked in at the gate or in advance, and the second may be taken into the cabin. Whether it’s a wheeled suitcase, laptop bag, or backpack. However, where the second piece of luggage is checked in varies from airport to airport. Sometimes at the counter, sometimes at the gate, and sometimes there are even baggage carts on the tarmac where you can quickly drop off your carry-on bag on the way to the plane.
Starting November 1, 2018, only one piece of carry-on luggage measuring a maximum of 40 cm x 20 cm x 25 cm—which fits under the seat—will be allowed in the cabin. A fee of €6.00 is generally charged during booking for a standard carry-on bag, and this must be checked in advance.
The rationale is that, according to Ryanair, this allows for better management of boarding delays as well as subsequent flight delays.
